Bringing Warmth to the Big Mountain

  A volunteer teaching team from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, consisting of two teachers and seven students who stayed on campus during the winter vacation, visited the mountain area of Meizhou, Guangdong Province, from Dec. 26 to Dec. 31. 

  They taught 4^th to 6^th grade courses at Dasong, a Primary school located in the remote Wuhua County. They treated the children with care and tenderness, well prepared before each class and lecture, trying their best to provide for the pupils with lessons they were interested in. 

       In a "Festival and Food" themed English class, the volunteers introduced holiday customs of both East and West, while the Children showed great interest in listening. When it was time for an interactive session following the teaching, the whole class began to indulge in a happy mood with full of fun. The kids fall over each other to raise their hands when answering questions: "Let me try! Let me try!" The volunteers taught the kids how to make sandwiches and salads, while helping them practicing English during the process.   

      To help the children open their eyes and to broaden their knowledge, the volunteers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, planned various activities well, introducing all kinds of animals and unsolved mysteries in the world. The kids were fascinated with the imaginary journey travelling around the world, and they began to share their stories from the encouraging adventure. 

      During the period, the volunteers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, also visited the homes of some left-behind children to learn and to understand how their daily life was like without parents around. 

      Although it was cold in the mountain during these days, the volunteers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, had brought warmth to the kids through their action. They planted seeds of hope in the little hearts of the children, telling them without saying that happiness came from helping others. 

      And this is just the beginning of the volunteering work of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. In an effort to make contribution to the society, another volunteer team has just been organized in order to provide teaching aid, community services, raising the concern and promoting the sense of social responsibility of citizens. 

In English class, the Children showed great interest in listening.
