Power transition theory and Sino-U.S. Relations: Bad Theory, Messy World
Power transition theory argues, a war is most likely to occur when a rising power is to challenge an established albeit declining power. Media and many analysts cite the theory to highlight the coming rivalry between China and the United States with the rise of China. However, the theory is not well supported by either historical evidence, empirical studies or the contextual analysis. This lecture is to highlight the problematic logics of the theory, ill-advised policy implications and why this problematic theory is widely cited by media and political elites.

Duan Xiaolin
Duan Xiaolin is an Assistant Professor in International Relations in Department of Global & Social Studies at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. He obtained his Ph.D in Public Policy from Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at National University of Singapore in 2017. His research interests include Chinese foreign policy and East Asian security, and theories of public and foreign policy analysis.
