Abstract:

How will fintech, AI, blockchain and other innovations impact OR/OM (operations research/ operations management) approaches in solving operational problems, and even more importantly, how will the problems themselves change? Some general thoughts and ideas will be discussed and shared, along with a brief overview of some technical issues involved in demand modeling, risk hedging, and machine learning.

Speaker Profile:

David D. Yao is the Piyasombatkul Family Professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Columbia University, where he is the founding chair of the Financial and Business Analytics Center at Columbia Data Science Institute, and more recently, co-director of the Columbia Fintech, AI and Business Analytics (FABULYS) Initiative. His research and teaching interests are in applied probability and stochastic systems, focusing on resource control and risk management issues. His honors and awards include the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, Franz Edelman Award from the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences, SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Outstanding Technical Achievement Award from IBM Research, and Great Teacher Award from the Society of Columbia Graduates. He is an IEEE Fellow, an INFORMS Fellow, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He currently serves on the Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine.
