        Speaker Profile

Duanqing Pei

Professor Duanqing Pei is an Associate Member of European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), Academic Director and former Director General of Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, CAS, Guangzhou, China. He is the founding executive director of the newly established Guangzhou Regenerative Medicine and Health Guangdong Laboratory, a new initiative in response to the National Lab System in China.

Upon returning to China, he started to work on stem cell pluripotency first and then reprogramming. The Pei lab was the first in China to create mouse iPSCs using a non-selective system, and then improved the iPS process systematically. His lab demonstrated that switching identity between mesenchymal and epithelial cells such as EMT and MET is essential in both reprogramming and differentiation; Vitamin C acts through DNA and histone demethylases to remove epigenetic barriers in reprogramming cells during iPSC generation; and a simple open/close mechanism that governs the chromatin accessibility dynamics associated with both Yamanaka and chemical induction of pluripotency (YIP and CIP). Now, his lab continues to explore new ways to understand and manipulate cell fate, utilize these cutting edge technology to cure diseases. Professor Duanqing Pei has received many awards, including twice National Award for Natural Sciences (2013 and 2018) and Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2017).

Ching-Hon Pui

Prof. Ching-Hon Pui is the chair of the Department of Oncology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He pioneered the use of precision medicine based on minimal residual disease, cancer genetics and host pharmacogenetics, and the total omission of radiation for the treatment of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. His work resulted in an unprecedented cure rate of over 90% in patients with this most common childhood cancer. He has formed three international organizations to extend the curative treatment globally, especially in China. He is one of the most highly cited investigators in Clinical Medicine. For his many scientific accomplishments, he has received numerous awards including elected membership in the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Academia Sinica in Taiwan.

David Y. H. Pui

Professor David Y. H. Pui is a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Presidential Chair Professor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China, and Regents Professor of the University of Minnesota, USA. He is the Director of the world-renowned Particle Technology Laboratory and of the Center for Filtration Research (CFR) with 21 leading international filtration manufacturers and end users as members. He has a broad range of research experience in aerosol and nanoparticle science and filtration technology and has over 300 journal papers and 40 patents. His recent development of Solar-Assisted Large-Scale Cleaning System (SALSCS) was widely acclaimed for PM2.5 mitigation.

Professor Pui has received many awards, including the Max Planck Research Award (1993), the Fuchs Memorial Award (2010) -- the highest disciplinary award conferred jointly by the American, German and Japanese Aerosol Associations, and the Einstein Professorship Award (2013) by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Chen Zhu

Academician Chen Zhu is the Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Chairman of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party and President of the Red Cross Society of China.
