The First Wutong Scholars Forum Held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
On August 20th, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen held the First Wutong Scholars Forum, featuring 48 outstanding young scholars who explored the academic world and sought common development through reports, academic seminars, and visits. These young scholars come from world-renowned universities, including Harvard University, Northwestern University, Imperial College, Birmingham University, University of Liverpool, The Ecole Polytechnic Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, University of Technology Sydney, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Hong Kong University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and so on.
The forum received around 400 applications from young scholars all over the world. A total of 48 outstanding young scholars were shortlisted to participate in this event. These young scholars have obtained doctoral degrees from well-known universities at home and abroad, and have made remarkable achievements in natural sciences, engineering technology, humanities and other fields. In this two-day forum, Scholars got a closer look at the The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and understand its relevant talent policies; The University, on the other hand, comprehensively assessed the professional level of participating scholars through a one-to-one forum. Young scholars who have performed well in the one-to-one forum will have the opportunity to be hired by the University.
Seeking for Talents, CUHK-Shenzhen set up attractive talent polices
Scientific research and high-quality higher education do not end after a certain period of time. Instead, they require inheritance with excellent education and talents. The introduction of high-end talents in this forum will enhance the quality of scientific research and higher education at CUHK-Shenzhen and even in the whole Shenzhen.

Luo Zhiquan, Vice President of CUHK-Shenzhen made the speech
At the opening ceremony of the forum, Professor Luo Zhiquan, the Vice President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, said on behalf of the University that the goal of CUHK-Shenzhen is to build an international research university. Depending on Shenzhen's first-class industrial environment and talent support policies, the University has achieved certain results in talent introduction, international exchange, and scientific research platform construction.
In addition to the national overseas high-level talent introduction plan (referred to as “National Thousand Talents' Plan”), Changjiang Scholars Award Program, Guangdong Province “Pearl River Talent Program”, etc., Shenzhen City also has corresponding international talent introduction policies, including Shenzhen Overseas High-level Talents Program (referred to as “Peacock Project”), Pengcheng Scholars ( Distinguished Professor of Longgang District, Shenzhen) and Shenlong Talents Program of Longgang District, to provide excellent scholars with research funding, incentive subsidies, and life service guarantees.

As of the end of July 2018, The University has introduced about 260 teachers, including 4 Nobel Laureates, 2 Turing Award winners, 14 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Engineering, United States National Academy of Sciences, Royal Canadian Academy of Sciences, Royal Canadian Academy of Engineering and so on, 16 IEEE Fellows, 19 talents from the recruitment Program of Global Experts(Thousand Talents Plan), 4 Distinguished Young Scholars of China, 3 winners of Changjiang Scholars Program, 2 Leading Talents of Guangdong, 4 Outstanding Talents of Shenzhen, 2 Leading Talent of Shenzhen, 94 talents from the Peacock Plan, 10 Pengcheng scholars of Shenzhen, and 86 Shenlong talents in Longang, Shenzhen.
In terms of faculty exchange, the School of Sciences and Engineering, CUHK-Shenzhen and the College of Biological Sciences and the College of Science & Engineering, the University of Minnesota have signed a faculty exchange agreement last December. According to the agreement, professors of the University of Minnesota who participates in the teacher exchange programme will take a full-time faculty position at CUHK-Shenzhen for at least one year, undertaking scientific research and teaching tasks. In this way, CUHK-Shenzhen teachers and students will be able to work or communicate with these overseas scholars.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, as an international high-level research university, has made great progress in many aspects such as talent introduction, scientific research and industrial incubation after four years of development. CUHK-Shenzhen has formed a significant social influence in the areas of robotics, smart manufacturing, and big data. The University has established the National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing, Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data (SRIBD), Shenzhen Finance Institute, Robot Institute of CUHKSZ, three Nobel Prize laureate institutes (Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine, Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery, and Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology) and a Turing Award scientist laboratory (Hopcroft Institute for Advanced Study in Information Sciences). In 2018, the University also established The Institute for Data and Decision Analytics, CUHK(SZ)-JD Joint AI Lab, and CUHK(Shenzhen)-Tencent AI Lab Joint Laboratory of Machine Intelligence.
