Accurate weather forecasting is of great significance in social life and production. To this end, Tianchi IEEE ICDM 2018 Global AI Challenge on Meteorology – “Catch Rain If You Can!” was held, in which four undergraduate students from the School of Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen stood out and won the championship.  In addition to monetary prizes, the winning team will be invited to present their innovative solutions at the IEEE ICDM 2018 workshop held in Singapore.

The open challenge “Catch Rain If You Can!” is co-organized by the Meteorological Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality (SZMB) and the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) on Alibaba Cloud's Tianchi platform. Aiming to harness AI technology to help the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area solve the problem of rainstorm prevention, the challenge is divided into two parts, the qualifying test and the final test, which lasts for five months, featuring the participation of 1,700 teams from all over the world.

In the qualifying test, CUHK-Shenzhen's contestants are divided into two groups, trying to provide solutions from different perspectives. After determining the better model, the students began to filter and classify the data. With constant brainstorming and model optimization, they successfully advanced to the finals. With the help of the instructor, they moved from regression model prediction to classification prediction, grasped every opportunity to submit data, and finally won the championship of the challenge.
