Cultural Interaction and Linguistic Contact Studies
Abstract
The lecture will introduce the new discipline of “cultural interaction” through various interesting examples from ancient materials. The influence of East-West language contact on modern Chinese will be explored on the basis of European documents compiled by Western sinologists (represented by missionaries) from the 17th to the 19th centuries, and the Mandarin materials in China’s surrounding regions such as Japan and North Korea. Next, Professor Keiichi Uchida will analyze the status quo and trends of the current linguistic contact research, and discuss the future development of the discipline.

Speaker Profile
Professor Keiichi Uchida received his Ph.D in Literature from Osaka City University and Ph.D in Cultural Interaction Studies from Kansai University. He is currently a Professor at the Graduate School of East Asian Cultures of Kansai University and the Director of Kansai University Open Research Center for Asian Studies (KU-ORCAS). He has served as the Curator of the Kansai University Library, the President of the Society for Modern Chinese Language, the Vice President of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching, and the President of the Society for Cultural Interaction in East Asia.
Professor Keiichi Uchida’s research interests include cultural interaction, eastward spread of western learning, and linguistic contact between modern Eastern and Western languages and cultures. He has published more than 300 papers and over 30 monographs represented by A Comprehensive Study of Mandarin, A Book Research of ‘Mandarin Compass’, A Study of Linguistic Contact between Modern Eastern and Western Languages and Cultures, and A Study of Cultural Interaction and Linguistic Contact.
