Abstract:

According to investopedia.com, "financial technology (FinTech) is used to describe new tech that seeks to improve and automate the delivery and use of financial services. At its core, fintech is utilized to help companies, business owners and consumers better manage their financial operations, processes, and lives by utilizing specialized software and algorithms that are used on computers and, increasingly, smartphones." FinTech may include many sectors such as supply chain finance, retail banking, fundraising and nonprofit, mobile payment, and investment management, as well as the development and use of crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin and Libra. Recently, several economics and management journals have jumped into the FinTech fray in a more concerted manner by publishing special issues closely related to FinTech, such as Journal of MIS (2018), Manufacturing & Service Operations Management (2018), Review of Financial Studies (2019), and Information Systems Research (ongoing).  In this talk, the speaker will survey the landscape of FinTech research and outline two of his research projects in FinTech. In addition, he would like to explore with the audience on whether or not there will be theoretical advancements in Finance and Economics in light of recent technological disruptions.
