Urban Studies in the Era of Big Data: Case studies in Shanghai

  • 2019.04.22
  • Event
The popularisation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has created a huge amount and variety of urban big data, like smart card data generated in the public transit system, cell phone data and GPS-tracked trajectories data etc. These data provide enormous opportunities for us to learn and understand cities. Based on personal research, this talk introduces several case studies in Shanghai to illustrate how to support urban studies using bike-sharing trip data and metro smart card data. Particularly, this talk focuses on how to quantitatively evaluate environmental benefits from bike-sharing, how to support electric fence (or geo-fencing) planning for dockless bike-sharing, how to understand the temporal pattern of human activities and how to identify human group travel behaviour using these mentioned datasets.
