The Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen:
The Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was established in 2015, composed of undergraduates and postgraduates who were from different schools and majors. They got together because of their passion for classical music. The Orchestra was dedicated to the development of classical music on campus and the promotion of both classical and modern music. It participated in many concerts held in Shenzhen Concert Hall, Longgang Cultural Center, Shenzhen Universiade Center, and performed Chinese music and foreign music, including Peer Gynt, The Mongolian, Can you Feel the Love Tonight and Let it Go.
Introduction of Online Course:
1. Systematically study music theory, including mode, intervals, chords, rhythm, beat, notation, etc.
2. Learn how to become a qualified orchestra player: focusing on the importance of harmony, conducting method, music notation, etc.
3. Theoretically and practically analyze the works which the Orchestra are practicing based on scores, video clips, and the composition background.
4. Recommendation for books and music works.
5. Assignments.
Students' Feedbacks:
“The lecturer was very professional and always maintained a clear thinking during the class. Difficult content can also be well grasped. We have gained a lot!”
“The content of the course is very beneficial to me as I always have a poor grasp of rhythm. I learned a lot and feel substantial in that one hour!”
“I hope that the teacher can provide a preview (for example, a terminology table) for me to learn the pronunciation and meaning of the upcoming terms in advance.”
Conductor's Note:“Thousands of practice may equip you with consummate performing skills, but theoretical knowledge and background information make the music you play sound more comfortable. That's why artistic performance won't be replaced by AI technology which can merely be applied to play notes but not to tell stories.”
The Chinese Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen:
The Chinese Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was established in August 2018. Its members play a number of musical instruments such as Zheng, Pipa, Bamboo Flute, and ethnic percussions. In practice, the Chinese Orchestra aims to demonstrate and explore the charm of Chinese music, as well as popularize specialized knowledge. Meanwhile, it will rehearse and perform outstanding Chinese music pieces to help those interested in Chinese music improve their skills and broaden their horizon, making the culture of Chinese music come to fruition on campus.
Introduction of Online Course:
This course aims to fill the gaps in the basic knowledge system of the Chinese Orchestra members:
1. Learn about the history and development of the Chinese orchestra, seating, the role of the conductor and so on through lectures and explanations.
2. Learn about the single tone, combined tone, and harmony by watching and listening.
3. Learn about famous Chinese orchestras and masterpieces through case studies, audio and video appreciation.
4. Enhance music theory and other knowledge through online teaching.
5. Learn ensemble pieces through online sharing and instructing.
Students' Feedbacks:
"Usually, rehearsal mainly focuses on practicing and coordinating on the chosen pieces, while through online sharing, we can learn more theoretical knowledge that is less involved in daily rehearsals. We can enjoy excellent performances together, so as to touch a more interesting side of conductors and members."
From Beryl Yang, Plucked Strings (Zheng)
"The ensemble of Chinese traditional musical instruments is so amazing! I feel that although the form relies on the western orchestra, our own Chinese music style and instrument arrangement are very unique!"
From Zoe He, Chinese Woodwind (Di)
"It supplemented my knowledge about the orchestra and will be of great help to live rehearsals in the future."
From Fay Sun, Plucked Strings (Pipa)
"The Chinese music is melodious when it is still and majestic when it is moving. Behind the beautiful auditory feast for the audience is the leadership of the conductor and the cooperation between each performer. A good ensemble does not lie in the extraordinarily high level of technique, but in the fact that each member truly integrates himself into the orchestra."
From Eddie Jiang, Percussion (Chinese Drum)
"With the same works, Chinese orchestras can interpret different colors. Similarly, only Chinese orchestra can tell the emotion of some works. It turns out that the gestures of the conductor are musical instructions related to the instrument. "
From Suzie Yao, Plucked Strings (Yangqing)
"Chinese music is the sound of nature, that you can hear the love and hatred belong to us and everything on this land. It’s the sound in our hearts and language in our blood."
From Melissa Fan, Plucked Strings (Zheng)
"As a Chinese who learned Chinese music since childhood, every time I hear Chinese music, I can feel the vibration of the heartstring that only belongs to China in the soul. Chinese music is not only limited to being classical and elegant, but it also has infinite possibilities for change and creation. I hope we can lead our own trend with Chinese music and enable more people to witness its charm."
From Annie Liao, Plucked Strings (Zheng)
"The more you know about Chinese music, the more you will feel it."
From Alby Hong, Chinese Woodwind (Di)
Conductor's Note:"Learn more about Chinese music. With more enthusiasm and confidence, anything is possible."
