On April 23rd, LHS invited Prof. Wei-Guo ZHU, a distinguished scholar in tumor molecular biology, Director of Health Science Center and Dean of School of Medicine in Shenzhen Univeristy to visit CUHK(SZ) and deliver an open seminar on Histone Modifications in Response to DNA Damage and Repair.

Seminar

The Seminar started at 10:30am, and Prof. Richard Ye, Dean of LHS gave a welcome speech and introduction of the guest speaker Prof. Wei-Guo Zhu.

Prof. Zhu started the seminar by introducing the basics on Epigenetics and summarization of previous reseach.

Prof. Zhu continued to explain the distinct roles of a heterodimer G9a/GLP in DNA damage repair. He mentioned that G9a is phosphorylated in response to DNA damage.

In the last part, Prof. Zhu talked about ATM (ataxia-telangiectasia mutated kinase) activation and inactivation in response to DNA damage. He explained the research progress he and his team have made in answering scientific questions such as how is ATM activation regulated by chromatin, is ATM activation regulated by linker histone H1, and how ATM becomes inactive after DNA damage repair is completed.

In Q&A session, Prof. Ye started asking the first question.

Prof. Brian Athey from University of Michigan, who also serves as a senior adviser to CUHK-Shenzhen, also engaged in discussion with Prof. Zhu.

After the seminar, Prof. Richard Ye, Dean of LHS, and Prof. Bao-Ting Zhu, Associate Vice President & Associate Dean of LHS, discussed some key topics on LHS development and cooperation with Prof. Wei-Guo Zhu. Prof. Ye introduced the development of LHS in faculty recruitment, curriculum design and research facilities. Prof. Ye also wished that ,under the framework of Greater Bay Area, the two universities will join hands for further collaboration in research and students' education.
