Year in Review: Top 10 Milestones of 2019

2019 has been a memorable year for CUHK-Shenzhen. Each ordinary day has been filled with extraordinary stories. With the commitment of the members of CUHK-Shenzhen community and the support of our friends from all walks of the society, we have taken small steps daily, weekly, and eventually a magnificent leap forward into the New Year. As we look back upon the milestones we have arrived over the past year, let us remember, we are co-inventors of each past achievement and future possibility.

Tripartite agreement on co-establishing

CUHK-Shenzhen School of Medicine signed

 

On January 25, Shenzhen Municipal Government, CUHK, and CUHK-Shenzhen signed the tripartite agreement on co-establishing CUHK-Shenzhen School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals. CUHK-Shenzhen School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals shall seek to integrate advanced medical education philosophies and practices with the resources and demands of the Greater Bay Area. To cultivate innovative medical talents that are of international perspective and humanitarian spirit, to bring into existence a first-rate medical center that provides eminent medical service and generates frontier medical research shall be the ultimate mission.

 

 

 

Student admission scores reached record-breakingly high

 

On September 1, over 2000 new students gathered at the Opening Ceremony of CUHK-Shenzhen, constiting of 1230 undergraduate students and over 700 graduate students from both home and abroad. The admission scores of CUHK-Shenzhen steadily increased on a year-to-year basis. The average admission score for science students surpassed tier 1 score by 137 points while the liberal arts students reached 87 points higher than tier 1 score. In the meantime, the university’s admission scores topped among universities in Guangdong for four consecutive years.

 

 

 

548 Bachelor’s students and 326 Master’s students graduated from Alma Mater

 

On May 18 and November 9, CUHK-Shenzhen celebrated the 2019 Graduation Ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students respectively. Our second baccalaureate graduating class consisted of 548 students from the School of Management and Economics and the School of Science and Engineering. 326 master’s students also started a new chapter in life.

 

 

School of Life and Health Sciences founded

 

CUHK-Shenzhen established its fourth school - the School of Life and Health Sciences – with Prof. Ye Dequan serving as its founding dean. Within the past year, LHS opened undergraduate programs in bioinformatics and biomedicine, and graduate program in biology for admission. Its two affiliated research institutes – Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology and Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery – came into full function, producing one groundbreaking research discovery after another.

 

 

AIRS and SRIBD established among Shenzhen’s 10 Fundamental Research Institutes

 

On January 5, the university’s Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (AIRS) and Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data (SRIBD) were officially established as two of Shenzhen’s 10 Fundamental Research Institutes. 

 

 

 

Preparation for Shenzhen School of Music launched

 

CUHK-Shenzhen launched its preparation for the establishment of the Shenzhen School of Music. Aiming to cultivate first-rate music talents and to foster international communication in music culture, the school shall seek to provide high-quality programs through bachelor’s to doctoral levels.

 

 

Second graduating class continue to thrive

 

Continuing the exceedingly exhilarating performance of CUHK-Shenzhen’s first graduating class, the Class of 2019 brought the record even higher. While 75.55% of the second graduating class entered the graduate schools of world-renowned universities, over 22% began navigating their paths in the job market. With the latter group, the average first year salary reached as high as 140,000 yuan RMB.

 

 

Global partner universities exceeded 100

 

On November 15, CUHK-Shenzhen celebrated its second International Partner Day with professors and international liaison officers from our global partner universities. The university’s global partners exceeded 100, covering 29 countries and regions across the globe. CUHK-Shenzhen now provides 160 programs of various nature and length, including summer courses, visiting, exchange, and research abroad. Over 60% of our current students have had credit-bearing overseas experiences.

 

 

 

Evaluation expert panels from China’s Ministry of Education and University Grants Committee of Hong Kong highly commended CUHK-Shenzhen’s education quality

 

In January, an evaluation expert panel led by members of the Ministry of Education conducted a comprehensive assessment of CUHK-Shenzhen, in terms of its education quality, faculty and student affairs, management and administration, scientific research, facilities, and other aspects. Later in May, The University Grants Committee of Hong Kong also carried out a careful appraisal of the university. Both evaluation groups highly commended CUHK-Shenzhen for what it has achieved and expressed positive expectations for its future.

 

 

 

Groundbreaking Ceremony of Shenzhen Jihua Hospital celebrated

 

On December 28, the Ground breaking Ceremony of Shenzhen Jihua Hospital – the affiliated hospital of CUHK-Shenzhen School of Medicine – took place. The hospital in prospect shall cover an area of 100,000㎡, with an initial construction investment of more than 4.9 billion yuan RMB. It will be constructed according to the standards of grade A class 3 comprehensive hospitals, integrating medical service, teaching, scientific research, disease prevention and health care, and rehabilitation into one.

 

 

The achievement of 2019 belongs to each and every CUHK-Shenzhener. May past glories light up our steps forward. Again, as we forge ahead with courage and hope, we think of those who have all along the way shown us support with enormous gratitude.
