MPhil-PhD Programme in Computer and Information Engineering

The School of Science and Engineering at CUHK(SZ) currently offers MPhil and PhD degrees to students in the broad area of Computer and Information Engineering (CIE). The research focus may be in artificial intelligence, communications and networking, computer vision, data science, digital signal processing, intelligent systems and robotics, operations research, optimization, bioinformatics, and related domains. An applicant with a research master’s degree should apply for admission to the PhD Stream, while an applicant with a bachelor degree may apply to either the MPhil or PhD Stream. Applicants should have an education background in science and engineering.

The MPhil-PhD Program in CIE aims to educate and cultivate research students and train them to perform cutting edge work and contribute to the advancement of knowledge and application. Students’ career paths include becoming leading academics and scientists/engineers in top universities, research institutes, and companies. 

Study Mode and Period

The study mode is full-time for all streams of the MPhil-PhD Program in CIE. The study period for students of different streams/stages are summarized below:

a. For MPhil students, the study period is from 24 months to 48 months.

b. For PhD students who enter with a research master’s degree, the study period is from 48 months to 72 months. Students have a maximum of 24 months to pass the candidacy requirement counted from first entry. Students who fail to pass the candidacy requirement within 24 months are required to withdraw from PhD study.

c. For PhD students who enter without a research master’s degree, the study period is from 60 months to 84 months. Students have a maximum 36 months to pass the candidacy requirement counted from first entry. Students who fail to pass the candidacy requirement within 36 months are allowed to switch to MPhil study.

The School of Science and Engineering at CUHK(SZ) has established a team of strong faculty in the area of CIE. They are PhD degree holders from top universities. Admission Requirements

For the MPhil Programme, applicants should have:

(1) graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or

(2) graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade not lower than “B”; or

(3) completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

(4) fulfilled the English Language Proficiency Requirement as specified below:

The applicant should either:

a. possess a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations: 

    Hong Kong Advanced Level Exam (AS Level) 

    Hong Kong Higher Level Exam

    CUHK Matriculation Exam, or

b. achieve Level 4 or above in the English Language subject of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination; or

c. have a degree from CUHK(SZ), or a recognized university with English as teaching language, or

d. submit one of the following original score reports/certificates for assessment by the Programme concerned: 
    TOEFL* (not lower than 550 paper-based; 213 computer-based; and 79 internet-based) 
    GMAT (Verbal, not lower than 21) 
    IELTS (Academic) (not lower than Band 6.5)
    or

e. have obtained a recognized professional qualification awarded in Hong Kong or an English speaking country.

For the PhD Programme, applicants should have:

(1) a Master's degree from a recognized university; or

(2) graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or

(3) graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade not lower than “B”; or

(4) completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

(5) fulfilled the “English Language Proficiency Requirement”:

The applicant should either:

a. possess a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations:
    Hong Kong Advanced Level Exam. (AS Level)
    Hong Kong Higher Level Exam.
    CUHK Matriculation Exam., or

For both MPhil and PhD Programme, there will be an interview administered by the Programme.

Tuition and Financial Support

The tuition for both MPhil and PhDstudents is RMB95000 per year, CUHK(SZ) offers various kinds of financial supports to selected applicants:

 (1) "PhD Fellowship", which consists of: (i) full tuition waiver (RMB95,000); and (ii) a 9-month after-tax stipend of RMB45,000. The student may also serve as a Research Assistant (RA) for three months during the summer for an after-tax stipend upto RMB7,000 per month.

 (2) "PGS ScholarshipI", which carries a full tuition waiver (RMB95,000). The student mayserve as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or RA to earn monthly after-tax stipends of up to RMB5,000 per month (12 months).

 (3) "PGS ScholarshipII", which carries a half tuition waiver (RMB47,500). The student’s advisor may cover the other half. The student mayserve as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or RA to earn monthly after-tax stipends ofup to RMB5,000 per month (12 months).

 (4) Fellowships and PGS scholarships are available to all applicants. The selection will be based onmerit and applicants do not need to apply.

 (5) Each fellowship andscholarship will be offered for a duration of up to 4 years, subject to annual review.

2. Scan Official Transcripts from Universities attended;

3. Scan Degree Certificates;

4. Scan Documents showing that the applicant has fulfilled the English Language Proficiency Requirement;

5. Scan proof of payment of the Application;

6. Scan Identity Card or Passport;
