CUHK(SZ) Opens Three New Undergraduate Programmes
The Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China has approved three new programmes launched by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (“University”). These are Translation (Liberal Arts), Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Sciences), and Professional Accountancy (Management).
Currently, the University has 11 undergraduate programmes in Finance, Marketing and Communication, Global Business Studies, Economics, and Professional Accountancy offered by the School of Management and Economics (“SME”), Computer Science and Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering, New Energy Science and Engineering, Statistics, and Mathematics and Applied Mathematics offered by the School of Science and Engineering (“SSE”), and Translation offered by the School of Humanities and Social Science (“HSS”), among which the programmes offered by SME and HSS accept both science and art students.
The three programmes have their own unique features.
Professional Accountancy intends to elevate students’ study efficacy through multiple study modes, i.e. classroom discussion, interactive communication, guest speakers, data reading, online study, individual or group study. It will equip students with accountancy education in line with global accounting standards, nurture their ability to identify and solve local and international accounting and business issues. Furthermore, the programme is designed in such a way so as to help students to get as many course waivers as possible if they wish to take examinations conducted by such professional accounting bodies as HKICPA, ACCA or CICPA.
Mathematics and Applied Mathematics has three streams: theoretical mathematics, applied mathematics and financial mathematics. In the first two years of their undergraduate study, students focus on basic courses, and in the third and fourth year, they will study major courses that they have selected. Faculty of the undergraduate programmes consist of domestic and international renowned scholars who are either outstanding in research or rich in teaching experience. In addition, the programme will broaden students’ vision, provide career advice and serve as a practicum platform thanks to the advantages that Shenzhen possesses in computer, finance and logistics, giving students more career choices either in China or abroad for further education.
The new translation programme is unique in that it is the first programme that was first open for graduate students and then for undergraduate students. The programme intends to train high-caliber bilingual professionals who are strong in both Chinese and English, familiar with translation or interpretation skills as well as knowledge in various disciplines. The programme makes full use of latest technology in translation, for instance, language lab and computer-aided translation as well as other IT technology, and the faculty all have international education background and first hand teaching or research capability. The School has also reached agreement with a couple of overseas universities so that students can participate in international exchange activities. Other arrangements enabling students to pursue a bachelor’s degree in China and continue to obtain a Master’s degree abroad are also in the making with world renowned universities, opening further opportunities for students to continue study or take up professional careers.
