The Inauguration Ceremony for Shenzhen Big Data Institute and the First Shenzhen Big Data Science International Symposium was held in The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (“University”) on March 19.

Officers of the University as well as experts from China and America, Finland and Canada attended the ceremony.

Tom Luo, Director of Shenzhen Big Data Institute (“Institute”) and Vice President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (“University”), delivered a speech, extending his welcome to presidents of listed companies and gratitude to Shenzhen Supercomputing Center for their contribution to the Institute. Professor Luo believes that as an economic engine of China, Shenzhen is best positioned for the Institute, which intends to embark on three pathways. First, communication and network resource allocation; second, urban management, helping the government make sound decisions by data mining; finally, intelligent medicine. Many hospitals have provided us their data and we hope to contribute to precision medicine through data analysis. His ambition is transform this Institute into a world-class data research center in five to ten years.

Professor Yangsheng Xu, University President and Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, said in his speech that top scientists in the big data field have joined the team and we will keep luring foreign elites to come work in Shenzhen. He also thanked National Nature Science Foundation of China, Shenzhen municipal government and Longgang district government for their staunch support.

The Institute is an important strategic maneuver, whereby Shenzhen Municipal Government will shift its development focus eastward and promote big data related industries. Because of the world class teaching and research capability available at the University, the platform and public data resources of the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen, and the extraordinary industrial environment of Longgang, we are convinced that the Institute will leverage its advantage to bridge entrepreneurship and industrial development, maintain its lead in world big data research, apply research results to medicine, education and mass transit, advise the government on decision making strategies, and serve the social and economic development of Longgang District, Shenzhen, even the nation as a whole.
