Five Promising Aircraft Structure Materials

Topic: Five Promising Aircraft Structure Materials

Speaker: CAO Chunxiao

Date: Thursday, October 13, 2016
Time: 16:00

Venue: Room 110, Zhixin Building
Language: Chinese

Speaker Profile:

CAO Chunxiao is a material scientist, titanium alloy expert, one of the founders of China’s titanium alloy and application research, and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He keeps developing innovative titanium alloy and Ti-Al inter-metallic compounds which are widely used in aviation industry. His research has significantly reduced the structural weight of aircrafts and their engines, rendering it possible to boost flight speeds, extend flight routes, and improve fuel economy.

Abstract:

Composite material, titanium alloy, superalloy, aluminum alloy and steel are the five main structural materials for modern aircrafts and engines. They are nicknamed the “Five Gold Flowers” of aircraft structure materials. “Materials Bringing about Upgrades” best describes the interaction between materials and equipment in aviation history. No advanced aircraft or aircraft engine is possible without advanced material science. The lecture will introduce the main characteristics, trends and applications of the five structural materials.
