Research Platform
In combination with the development of disciplines and strategic emerging industries, relying on the university's advantageous disciplines, and guided by major projects, we will strengthen the construction of the industry-university-research coordinated innovation system, deeply participate in the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao innovation circle, and build up a number of world-class innovation platforms.
Through the end of January 2019, the university has established numerous innovative platforms, including the National-local joint Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing, two institute of top ten basic research institutions in Shenzhen (Shenzhen Research Institute of Artificial Intelligent and Robot & Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data), Shenzhen Finance Institute, Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing, three Shenzhen key laboratories (Semiconductor laser, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, IoT Intelligent System and Wireless Network Technology), three Nobel Laureate Labs(Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology & Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery&Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine) and the first Turing Award Laureate Lab (Hopcroft Institute for Advanced Study in Information Sciences), Future Network of Intelligence Institute, two university-enterprise joint laboratories(CUHK(SZ)-Tencent AI Lab Joint Laboratory of Machine Intelligence&CUHK(SZ)-JD Joint AI Lab) and the Innovation and entrepreneurship base for Galaxy World & CUHK(SZ),etc.
1) National-local joint Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing
The National-local joint Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing, leading by Prof. Yangsheng Xu (an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), has set up a strong scientific research team. From the scientific research rank, this team is one of the most active robot research teams in the world. It takes on a large number of national scientific research programs which has successfully developed more than 30 robots and intelligent systems in the field of space robots, industrial robots, service robots, special robots, medical robots and intelligent car robots.
2)Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society https://airs.cuhk.edu.cn/zh-hans
Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (AIRS) is one of the top ten basic research institutions in Shenzhen. It was sponsored by seven world's leading robotics and artificial intelligence research institutions, including the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) Robotics and Intelligent Manufacturing Research Institute, MIT. College of Computer and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute, University of Pennsylvania GRASP Laboratory, Stanford University Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Zurich Institute of Technology Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute, Edinburgh University School of Information.
For furthering specific AI technologies research, AIRS will establish five joint research centers (the first batch), focusing on two categories of common AI technologies, which are machine learning and AI architecture, computer vision, as well as three system platforms, which are intelligent transportation system, service robot and artificial intelligence application. Since then, according to the development of the institute, we plan to set up other joint research centers and build up open platforms where gathers top teams. Meanwhile, SRIAIR sets up open research topics, which is based on institute guideline and is opened for application of research institutes in Shenzhen, and cooperates with a least one oversea initiator for participation.
Based on the strategic needs of Shenzhen, Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and the country, and relying on the Chinese university of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), the institute will create an international open research institute, which will continuously attract and gather the world's best scientists, and carry out research on originality, commonality and key technologies. It will promote technology integration and application, for becoming artificial intelligence and robotics industry propeller; It will build a gathering place for high-end talents of intelligent system, and strongly promote Shenzhen to be a global core city of artificial intelligence technology and industrial development.

Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data (SRIBD) was established in March 2016 by the Shenzhen government to lead and coordinate the research and development of big data related innovation in Shenzhen. The institute’s initial funding is through the Shenzhen Peacock project on “Big Data Information Processing and Application”, led by the institute’s founding director Prof. Zhi-Quan Luo of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen).
The goal of SRIBD is to become a world-class big data research institute which has independent intellectual property rights and outstanding core technology advantages, and to become one of the top ten basic research institutions in Shenzhen. SRIBD is committed to attracting the world's top talents in the field of big data, promoting the transformation of advanced technologies, developing disruptive technologies that lead the transformation of the big data industry, constantly spawning new businesses and creating new jobs.
The institute focuses on the core issues in big data research including big data foundation theory, future new computing system for big data, big data driven intelligent application technology. We aim to establish a world-class research team composed of scientists from relevant disciplines and different research fields to conduct cross-disciplinary research and talent training. With SRIBD as a platform, we will gather various big data research strengths and industrial partners in Shenzhen, Dawan District, national and international, and jointly explore and develop the basic research and industrialization of big data.
4)Shenzhen Finance Institute http://sfi.cuhk.edu.cn/
The Shenzhen government entrusted The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) to establish Shenzhen Finance Institute (SFI), to respond to the “Belt and Road” Initiative, Guangdong-Hong Kong and Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperation, and the demand for high-level education and research institutions with Shenzhen’s rapid socioeconomic development; to satisfy the expectations from mainstream academia and industries from all over the world to build a platform with “global vision and Chinese focus” for research and communication; and to tackle the opportunities and challenges brought by the upcoming changes in the world’s financial and economic structures. SFI is committed to nurturing high-end talents in the field of finance and economics, conducting high-level research, establishing a global exchange platform, and functioning as a state-of-the-art think-tank. Our mission and vision are articulated below:
1 To nurture high-end talents: SFI has collaborated with CUHK-Shenzhen to offer Master programmes in the fields of economics and finance, and business management, and non-degree executive education programmes. At present, SFI offers five full-time Master of Science programmes in finance, economics, accounting, data science, and marketing, and two part-time Master of Science programmes in finance and business management. In the future, other graduate and doctoral programmes in the field of economics and finance are to be offered.
2 To conduct high level research: SFI has developed multiple research centers, collaborated with Princeton University and The People’s Bank of China to set up postdoctoral research programmes, and recruited researchers from home and abroad, with the aim of studying the theoretical issues and policy decisions regarding the Chinese economy with a focus on the Shenzhen and Hong Kong markets
3 To establish a global exchange platform: SFI hosts international academic conferences periodically, and has co-hosted symposiums with internationally renowned institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Princeton University, and the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). In addition, SFI also initiated VoxChina.org, an academic exchange platform that focuses on trending issues in the global economic and financial fields, committed to publishing advanced scholarly research that addresses issues concerning the development of the Chinese economy while meeting international academic standards for research excellence.
4 To function as a think-tank for financial strategic planning: SFI has established several research centers, including the Center for Macro-Financial Stability and Innovation, Center for Institutions and Capital Market, Center for FinTech and Social Finance, Center for Economic Data Research, Center for Bay Area Development and Chinese Economy, Center for Corporate Governance and Employee Ownership, Hong Kong-Shenzhen Finance Research Centre, and Center for Capital Markets and Asset Management Research. The research teams focus on current economic issues and lead projects that assist policymakers in the local government.
5 To collaborate with financial institutions: SFI has formed a long-term partnership with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange to host regular workshops, and joined the China FinTech Industry Association organized by China Securities Regulatory Commission and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as a council member. SFI has cooperated with Shenzhen Municipal Financial Regulatory Bureau and other institutions, such as associations, organizations, universities and financial institutions, to launch Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macau FinTech Professional Programme. SFI and ACCA jointly organize Shen Xian Hu Accounting Forum regularly. Besides, SFI also invites notable scholars and industry experts to host SFI Distinguished Lecture Series to exchange thoughts on pioneering financial and economic topics that would facilitate social and industrial changes.
5)Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing
The Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing is dedicated to the robot study field (space robot, special robot on security safeguard, intelligent community service robot, and industry robot & automation equipment, etc.). It is expected to make great contribution to the development of the intelligent technology in the Pearl River Delta Area.
6)Shenzhen key laboratory of Semiconductor laser
The laboratory of the Shenzhen key laboratory of Semiconductor laser covers area of 500 square meters. The team has nine overseas returnees with PhD degrees, accounting for 36% of the total number of the team. Project Leader and core backbone scientific research members have long-term photonics research experience.
7)Shenzhen key laboratory of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen)-Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence is directed by Professor Shuguang Cui. Within the laboratory, researchers are divided into different groups according to the research directions, which include platform, theory, and applied research. The laboratory conducts research for the representation, storage, calculation, and transmission of big data; develops artificial intelligence technology, and apply big data methods to build new intelligence models for new applications. The laboratory team has established a good cooperative relationship with a number of local enterprises and institutions, such as the National Supercomputing Center at Shenzhen, China Mobile (Shenzhen), Luohu Hospital, etc.
8)Shenzhen key laboratory of IoT Intelligent System and Wireless Network Technology
Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence is directed by Professor Shuguang Cui. 9)Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials Product Engineering
The laboratory will strive to make itself a public and innovating research platform that can lead the development of international advanced polymer materials driven by the needs of national development strategies, and cultivate as a guangdong key laboratory.
10)Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Steroid Drug Discovery and Development
The laboratory aims to comprehensively use research methods of structural and functional analysis, large-scale virtual screening and drug design, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology, etc., to develop targeted steroid drug screening designs and pharmacological/ toxicological evaluation, providing theoretical and applied basises for the development of new interventions and treatments for human diseases.
11)Robot and Intelligent manufacturing Institute of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The institute, jointly with Shenzhen Ganglong robotic and intelligent manufacturing technology corporation, will implement the scientific research achievements transformation and industrialization, preferential invest the latest scientific research achievements of hatching institute, create a national science and technology business incubators and accelerator, boost the rapid development of the innovative entrepreneurial teams, create a national important demonstration foundation of robotic and intelligent manufacturing.
12) Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology (AWI) and Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery (KIIDD) were established on April 10, 2017 and are the first batch of Nobel laureate labs at the University. Led by Nobel laureate in Chemistry in 2013 Arieh Warshel, Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology is a significant milestone in the University’s attempt to evolve into a world research university.
Prof. Arieh WARSHEL earned his PhD degree in Chemical Physics in 1969, respectively), with Shneior Lifson, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. He is a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Distinguished professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at University of Southern California. He has become a distinguished professor by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen since September 2014.
Aiming to become a world-class theoretical computational biology center, the Warshel Institute for Computational biology focuses on both basic and practical interdisciplinary research, and cultivates bioinformatics and systems biology talents with comprehensive training. For basic research, the institute pursues computational structural biology, which covers protein structure prediction, protein engineering and activity improvement, enzyme reaction mechanism, enzyme design, molecular simulations of protein and nucleic acids, computer-aided drug design, algorithm development and software service. For practical research, the institute focuses on high-throughput biology and bioinformatics, which applies high-throughput sequence analysis technology in genomics and precision medicine, covering disease pathogenesis, early diagnosis biomarkers and innovative drug development. The institute will also work closely with ally research platforms, such as the on-campus Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data, Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery, Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine and off-campus medical institutions, in shaping tight industry-university cooperations that nurture the development of health food, medical and beauty products, plant medicine, drugs and disease gene testing platform in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
13) Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery and Arieh Warshel Institute of ComputationalBiology are the first two Nobel laureate labs at the University. These two institutes is a significant milestone in the University’s attempt to evolve into a world research university.
Over the past two years, the Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery has attracted young talents and established a critical mass in structural biology research. Professor Brian Kobilka, 2012 Nobel laureate in chemistry for his studies of G protein-coupled receptors, serves as Senior Advisor to the Institute. Dean of the School of Life and Health Sciences and Presidential Chair Professor, Richard Ye directs the institute for its research on membrane proteins and novel drug discovery.
14) Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen ("The Institute") headed by Professor Aaron Ciechanover was established on March 22nd, 2018. The Institute led by Professor Ciechanover, Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry in 2004, is the third Nobel laureate led institute of the University.
Professor Aaron Ciechanover, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 2004, serves as Distinguished Professor of Research at the Israel Institute of Technology. He is a Foreign Member of the American Academy of Sciences, and an Honorary Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine has two major research focuses: precision medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and infectious disease; regenerative medicine for stem cell based treatment of stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, etc. Precision medicine is an extremely important and hot frontier area that combines and transcends many research disciplines such as medicine, pharmaceutics, life science, genomics, big data and artificial intelligence. Regenerative medicine has become a vitally important area of medical research, development and commercialization. The Institute will seize the strategic opportunity vital to human health and high technology development and fully capitalize on the existing technological advantages and global influence of many world-renowned scientists of the Institute to become a world-class research and development organization within a short period of time. Through close collaboration with other research platforms of CUHK-Shenzhen such as Robot Institute of CUHK-Shenzhen, Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data, Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery, Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology and with many companies in Shenzhen on technology transfer and commercialization, the Institute will play a leading role in the development of world-class biopharmaceutical and health industries in Shenzhen Municipality and the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau.
15)Hopcroft Institute for Advanced Study in Information Sciences, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The Hopcroft Institute for Advanced Information Science (the “Institute”) was founded by John E. Hopcroft, the Turing Award winner in 1986. Prof. Hopcroft received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1964, and he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
One of the purposes of establishing the institute is to provide an excellent research environment where scholars and scientists may conduct research on artificial intelligence and computer science.
The Institute would engage in research on super distributed system, security and privacy protection for distributed data, data intensive computing, content and scenario perceptional computing, and deep learning-based intelligent computing, which are all highly complex disciplines and will produce a huge impact on social development.
16)Future Network of Intelligence Institute,the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The Future Network of Intelligence Institute (FNii) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen is directed by professor Cui Shuguang. The institute is undertaking relevant National Key R&D Project, Guangdong Key R&D project, and has set up the CUHK(SZ)-SRTC Spectrum Big Data Joint Lab, the CUHK(SZ)-JD Joint AI Lab, and Shenzhen key laboratory of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence. Based on these research platforms, FNii is aiming to build up a high-talented team of 30 scientists, 20 post-doctors, and 100 doctoral students, focusing on scientific research of data-driven information networks, brain-alike AI, human-machine interface, distributed intelligence, and smart hospital applications. FNii will combine the resources of CUHK (SZ) in intelligence, networks, and systems to build up a world-class scientific research platform for the university and Shenzhen. It will provide driving forces for the development of Shenzhen's information industry.
17) CUHK(SZ)-Tencent AI Lab Joint Laboratory of Machine Intelligence
This university-enterprise joint laboratory had been established in June,2018. Through the cultivation of talents and joint research, the joint laboratory will carry out all-round cooperation and play its advantage to build the innovation system of industry (hospital)-university-research alliance. The joint laboratory will also build an integrated ecology of production, study and research in big data, computer vision, natural language processing and machine learning research aspects, etc. Meanwhile the joint laboratory will stimulate and explore opportunities for the research and application for the depth of talent in the field of artificial intelligence and big data, as well as provide technical support for Tencent related products business. The joint laboratory will recruit several doctoral students each year for joint training. Tencent will provide funds for each students.
18) CUHK(SZ)-JD Joint AI Lab
This university-enterprise joint laboratory had been established in August,2018. Through the cultivation of talents and joint research, the joint laboratory will carry out all-round cooperation and play its advantage to build the innovation system of industry (hospital)-university-research alliance. The joint laboratory will also build an integrated ecology of production, study and research in big data, computer vision, natural language processing and machine learning research aspects, etc. Meanwhile the joint laboratory will stimulate and explore opportunities for the research and application for the depth of talent in the field of artificial intelligence and big data, as well as provide technical support for JD related products business. The joint laboratory will recruit several doctoral students each year for joint training. JD will provide funds for each students.
19)CUHKSZ-LUOHU Joint Lab of Medical Big Data
CUHKSZ-LUOHU Joint Lab of Medical Big Data is directed by Professor Shuguang Cui. The two sides of the cooperation make full use of their respective expertise to carry out comprehensive collaboration through various forms such as talent training and joint research, with an innovation system being built over this industry-university-research alliance. The lab is fully applying the frontiers of artificial intelligence to process electronic medical records, medical imaging, genomics, etc.
20)CUHKSZ-State Radio Monitoring Center Testing Center (SRTC) Spectrum Big Data Joint Laboratory
CUHKSZ-State Radio Monitoring Center Testing Center (SRTC) Spectrum Big Data Joint Laboratory is co-directed by Professor Shuguang Cui from CUHKSZ and Director Junfeng Wang from SRTC. The two parties will make full use of their respective advantages to carry out comprehensive collaboration through various forms such as talent training and joint research, in order to jointly build an innovation system of the industry-university-research alliance. The collaboration will establish an integrated industry-university-research ecological environment in the research areas of spectrum big data and intelligent spectrum management, and stimulate opportunities for application exploration in related fields. The collaboration aims at solving technical and application problems faced by the radio spectrum management, transforming relevant solutions to real industry problems.
21)CUHK(SZ)-Jincheng Advanced Synthetic Materials Joint Laboratory
The joint laboratory will rely on CUHKSZ's academic research advantages as well as Jincheng Petrochemical R&D's industrial application, research the advanced synthetic materials and their applications. The joint laboratory will undertake scientific research projects and apply for scientific research funding, focus on problem orientation, and solve important problems in the field of advanced polymer materials.
22)China Construction Bank Shenzhen Branch -The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) Fintech Innovation Cooperation Lab
Both parties agree to establish “China Construction Bank Shenzhen Branch - The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) innovation lab”. The innovation lab will serve as a platform to develop the following cooperation, a. Set up the Base of Research & Internship, b. Fintech Innovation Projects Incubation, c. Cooperation in Research Projects, d. Cooperation FinTech entrepreneurship competition.
23)CUHK(SZ)-CAS-NOVA Joint Laboratory of Satellite Communication and Remote Sensing Technology
The joint laboratory will make full use of respective advantages of two parties, cooperate through various forms of talent cultivation, joint research, etc., build an innovation system of the industry-university-research alliance, provide technical support for remote sensing technology and satellite communications related product business.
24)Longgang Key Laboratory of Next Generation Solar Devices
With the rapid development of economy and technology in today’s society, the problems of depletion of non-renewable energy and environmental pollution caused by energy consumption are becoming increasingly urgent. The development and application of new energy technologies has become the consensus of mankind, and countries around the world are supporting completely the development of the new energy industry through various policies. The research of new generation solar technology is one of the research hotspots in the global scientific research community.
This laboratory relies on the support from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (shenzhen), and the Nano Opto-Electronics Lab (NOEL) is responsible for the specific implementation. The core element of solar thermal photovoltaic (STPV) technology will be designed, and solar thermal photovoltaic technology will be realized based on latest nano-fabrication technology, which converts broad-spectrum solar energy into heat energy with modified radiated thermal energy that matches the band gap of the battery. The theoretical maximum efficiency of using solar energy is 85.4%, which is expected to break through the bottleneck of the photoelectric conversion efficiency of traditional photovoltaic technology. Main research field and research contents are:
- Research on the broad-spectrum light-absorbing materials;
- Design and the fabrication of micro / nano-structures for optical absorption and radiation devices;
- Research on photo-thermo-electric coupling of optical micro / nano structure;
- Establish a standard measurement scheme for measuring and characterizing solar devices in the service industry.
The team consists of 2 professors, 3 assistant researchers, 5 doctoral students, 3 master's students and 1 full-time management staff, including 3 overseas doctors, accounting for 25% of the total team. Prof. SK Hark (https://sse.cuhk.edu.cn/en/node/1416), lab director and academic leader, has been researching nanoscience and technology since 2003, and has published 150 journal articles and conference papers. He has been cited more than 3343 times. Professor SK Hark was one of the earliest researchers to grow semiconductor nanowires by MOCVD. At present, this technology has become a widely accepted and superior quality nanowire production technology.
25)Longgang Key Laboratory of Organic Optoelectronic Materials and Devices
This key laboratory is led by Professor Yongbo Liang, the Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and also including two professors, two associate researchers, several postdoctoral and PhD students. Professor Liang received his B.Sc.(Hon.) degree from the University of Kent at Canterbury (1979), M.Sc. (Organometallic Chemistry) from the University of Sussex (1980) and Ph.D. from the University of Western Australia (1984). After his Senior Postdoctoral Fellow position in Sussex University (UK), he joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1990 and was Professor from 1997 to 2015. He is now the Adjunct Professor of Chemistry Department in the Chinese University of Hong Kong (shenzhen).
The main research of this laboratory includes: Design and simulation of the molecular structure of single-component white luminescent materials (benzene, two-dimensional perovskite, etc.). Synthesis and characterization of one - component white light emitting materials. Preparation and characterization of OLED devices based on single component white light emitting materials. Establish the standard measurement solutions for materials synthesis and characterization of OLED devices servicing for industry. It aims to become a first-class laboratory for ultra-precision organic synthesis and device preparation.
26) Longgang Key Laboratory of Applied Spintronics
Longgang Applied Spintronics Lab focuses on the development of the new magnetic memories, logic computing devices and spin torque nano oscillators. The equitments in the lab includes: magnetron sputtering equipment, magneto- optical Kerr microscope, microwave test platform, Brillouin light scattering microscope and high-performance servers etc. Currently, there are 12 members in the lab: PI, 5 postdoctoral fellows, 2 PhD students and 2 research assistants, they are professional talents from different fields including: first principles calculation, numerical simulation and experimental preparation of micro nano processing. Our research results have been published on various high impact journals such as Nature Physics, Nature Electronics and Nature Communications etc.
27)Innovation and entrepreneurship base for Galaxy World & CUHK(SZ)
Innovation and entrepreneurship base for Galaxy World & CUHK(SZ) was based on the cooperation between Galaxy World Group and CUHK(SZ) to encourage student entrepreneurship. Galaxy Group will provide office spaces and funds to be managed by the University Foundation in accordance with its financial Rules and Regulations. Center for Innovation, Design and Entrepreneurship will provide innovative teaching courses for entrepreneurship teams, carry out project-based teaching and training, promote technology transfer, communication and cooperation.
