In the 12th lecture of the Meeting the Intellectuals in the Spring Hills Lecture Series, we are most grateful to Carolyn for giving us a glimpse of the charm of "ambiguity" in art and exploring the charm of body language as words are insufficient.

The twists and turns in Kunqu,

The mysterious elegance under the  mask of Noh Drama,

The poetical call of Hamlet,

The absurdity of Waiting for Godot...

Thousands of stage workers have performed their answers in different plays.

Talk丨The Power and Emptiness of Nothing

Why can the stage bring beauty?

Or, why some stages can't bring beauty?

In the 12th lecture of the Meeting the Intellectuals in the Spring Hills Lecture Series, Carolyn Choa led everyone to think about the meaning of "ambiguity" in the stage art, by sharing her experiences in her artistic career.

"Ambiguity" is a sense of vagueness, the power of zero, and an empty hand but full of energy.

"Ambiguity" is not just a blank in the form of art, or a long rest after the end of the symphony. Shakespeare's Hamlet is a chatterbox, but his poetic words leave the infinite space of delusion to the future generations to explain.

At the same time, she shared the fear and excitement of creating a piece of art from scratch. It is hard for us as the audience to imagine the difficulties behind the scenes when sitting in front of the curtain for the final show. It is like our blind spot of the iceberg underwater.

Workshop丨Outside Words

In the "Outside Words" workshop, she initiated an exploration with the students of empathy and body language.

Telling other people's dream in the first-person, one-word is equal to one move of dance. In this workshop, Carolyn and our students explored the "words" and experienced how "dance" could supplement "outside words".

[Meeting the Intellectuals in the Spring Hills]

“Meeting the Intellectuals in the Spring Hills” is one of the University's lecture series where the University will invite social elites in such fields as culture and arts to share with our students in form of salon or lecture to promote a discussion of thought-provoking issues or soul-searching experiences. During the lectures, everyone will have a chance to listen and respond on their world views, their aspirations, and intellectual taste in life.
