Abstract

The world’s 7 largest firms are two-sided platforms. Dominant platforms benefit from direct and indirect network externalities. We will first analyse the business model of platforms. We will then look at how competition authorities should react to this new environment so as to promote innovation without hampering innovation. The third issue we will tackle is that of privacy; while individuals’ stated demands for privacy and actual behavior seem inconsistent, we will shed an economics light on the issue and discuss possible regulation.
