Diligentia Night Talk: First Class for New Semester
A prize-giving game was introduced as a warm-up of the talk. The game had covered questions from the University Motto “Through learning and temperance to virtue” to that of Diligentia College; from college history and values to the information of our Wardens and administrative teachers and so on. Then Prof. Gu Yang shared us with one of the college alumni’s stories; Diligentia College has been actively in contact with graduated students. The College has kept track of information of students every term. We wish, in this way, that our college is here to provide students with care and help through their career lives. From the establishment of Diligentia College in 2016, we have seen a prosperous and thriving growth of it. Sometimes, the college is even more important than schools in terms of reaching out to peers and getting involved in. At the same time, many visiting schools and companies have seen a strong cohesiveness in Diligentia College. This conduces them to reserve many opportunities for our schools and students. Colleges provide non-formal learning opportunities which, together with the formal curricula from schools, are designed to nurture students' interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity and build up their confidence and sense of social responsibility. After that, Prof. Gu Yang explained the meaning of our new College Emblem designed by Mr. Alan Chan, a world-renowned Hong Kong designer.
The Chinese Character “学( Xue)”: Learning to behave, learning to give
Quotation Marks & Braces: Diversity and inclusion
Question Mark: A strong spirit of inquiry
Circle: Comprehensive and inclusiveness
Exclamation Mark: Courage and determination
The greatest part of the Emblem, said by Prof. Gu Yang, is the semi-open boundaries of it. They indicate unlimited possibilities in the development path for Diligentia students. Thus, the establishment of CUHK-Shenzhen can be regarded as reciprocating the culture and tradition from Hong Kong to the Mainland. We hope that CUHK-Shenzhen will continually foster talents under the idea of the demonstration pilot zone for socialism with Chinese characteristics of Shenzhen.
Subsequently, three Wardens were invited to share their expectations with students. Dr. Hong Mingyan, Warden of Building A, said that students should cultivate their wit as well as emotional intelligence under the help from tutors and wardens. “Wisdom can turn our knowledge into values”, said by Dr. Hong.
Then Prof. Ren Ruobing, Warden of Building B talked about self-discipline. He would not fail the faith of parents who sent their children here, said by the professor.
The Warden of Building C is Dr. Gong Wengao. He admitted the importance of setting a positive role among students. He hopes that everyone would abide by the rules, be it laws or the campus regulations.
Prof. Gu Yang wrapped up by saying that CUHK-Shenzhen would provide students with the best resources, but students should take the initiative in the meantime. To draw an end of the event, students were asked to give one word to summarize the Night Talk. “Being decent” is the core idea of this talk. We sincerely hope that everyone will bear goodwill, form good habits, stay resilient and optimistic and contribute to the society.
