Zheng Lin and Wendong Cui, two young teachers from the School of Humanities and Social Science, have successfully applied for Youth Foundation of Ministry of Education. The foundation is the most prestigious funding program in social science.

Ms. Lin’s thesis is entitled A Study on Beijing Parks: Public Space as Cultural Space and Literature Performance. It explores how parks came to the Late Qing Dynasty and Republic of China as a western concept, witnessing a transition between tradition and modernity, local and foreign culture. It reveals the complex and multi-faceted transformations the ancient city has undergone with respect to politics, history, literature and culture, and is intended to find a cross-disciplinary or cross-cultural approach to unravelling the mysterious relationships between a city and its residents, politics and literature, ancient days and contemporary times.

Mr. Cui’s thesis is entitled A Study on Translations of Biographies of Western Heroes in Late Qing Dynasty. It explores the methods whereby translators employed to build a new paradigm of heroism. In addition, it attempts to analyze how these translators innovatively transformed Chinese traditions and foreign resources and how they restructured different local literary schools and ideologies. It is Mr. Cui’s wish to shed light on translations of western heroes from the perspective of literary research and history study.
