【Lecturer Introduction】
Born and raised in Beijing, Ms. Wang Yuanyuan is one of China’s leading modern dance choreographers, founder and artistic director of Beijing Dance Theater. She is Honorary Fellow of Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She holds a BFA in choreography from the Beijing Dance Academy, and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts School of Dance in Los Angeles.
In 2008, Ms. Wang with veteran stage designers founded the Beijing Dance Theater. A series of contemporary creation - Diary of Empty Space - premiered in the same year, followed by Stirred from a Dream, Haze, Prism, The Color of Love, Martlet, Harvest, Golden Lotus(commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival), Wild Grass, Hamlet, The Nightingale and the Rose, Poison(commissioned by the Festspielhaus St. Pölten in Austria), Early Spring (commissioned by the Shanghai Opera House).
In recognition of the excellence of her choreography, Ms. Wang is named resident choreographer for the National Ballet of China and has been invited to serve as Guest Choreographer at New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Shanghai Ballet, and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
In 2017, Ms. Wang directed her first stage play, Henrik Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea, which has enjoyed sold-out performances on its first domestic tour. Ms. Wang was resident choreographer for the National Ballet of China, and she has worked as guest choreographer at New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Shanghai Ballet, California Institute of the Arts, and the HKAPA. Aside from her early award as a dancer in the Paris International Dance Competition, Ms Wang has won ‘Best Choreographer’ awards at the Varna International Ballet Competition in Bulgaria, the USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi, and the Moscow and Shanghai International Ballet Competitions respectively, making her the most internationally awarded Chinese choreographer to date.
Ms. Wang has been invited to give master classes in China and abroad, at venues and institutions including the Mark Morris Dance Center, the Kennedy Center, Columbia College Chicago, Sadler’s Wells, Theatre Bonn, the National Theatre of Iceland, the Cervantino International Festival, Israeli Opera, Beijing Dance Academy, and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, among others.
“Chun Shan Ya Ju” or “Meeting Intellectuals in the Spring Hills”, is one of the University's lecture series where the University will invite social elites in such fields as culture and arts to share with our students in form of salon or lecture to promote a discussion of thought-provoking issues or soul-searching experiences. During the lectures, everyone will have a chance to listen and respond on their world views, their aspirations, and intellectual taste in life.
